News Update – Task Team to address CBD Cleanliness and Law Enforcement

Members of the Mayoral Committee have expressed dissatisfaction with the state of cleanliness in the Bloemfontein CBD, following a walkabout in the area on Thursday, 06 June 2013.
This was during a fact finding mission regarding the state of cleanliness, law enforcement and the health environment in and around the CBD.
Clr Moses Sekakanyo, Clr Papiki Moeng and Clr Lebohang Masoetsa led officials of Mangaung Metro in a bid to find out what the challenges in the area are, and how these can be resolved.
During the inspection which spanned from Middestad Mall and went beyond the Central Park Bus Station, the following appalling conditions were discovered:
- Dumping of rubbish in and around Floreat Arcade and along Central Park bus station
- Unlicensed traders
- Illegal parking of vehicles along the Floreat Arcade
- Burning of rubbish in forbidden areas
- Illegal erection of small business structures next to the old post office
Following the walkabout, a meeting was convened on Friday, 07 June, where a an inter-departmental task team was formed to deal with the issues which were discovered on Thursday. The team is comprised of various sub-directorates which includes:
- Traffic and security
- Environmental health
- Building inspection and town planning
- Fresh produce
- Communications
- Solid waste
- SMME development and
- Engineering services
The team, which will be convened by GM: Solid Waste Me Glory Twala, will look at rectifying the situation regarding cleanliness and law enforcement in the CBD. This will also assist in the process that is currently taking place of moving people into the Intermodal Facility.
This operation stems from a promise the Executive Mayor Clr Thabo Manyoni made during his inauguration September 2011 to turn Mangaung into “an attractive, clean, green and healthy environment that will serve as the basis for sustainable economic development and enhance the quality of life for present and future generations”.
