Implementation of Water Restrictions to Ensure Continues Water Supply

Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality Council on 03 July 2015 resolved that water restrictions be implemented in the city’s jurisdiction in order to ensure continuous water supply. This is line with the Government Gazette No. 37421 dated 14 March 2014 gazetted by the National Department of Water and Sanitation (NDWS).

As the city, we have started implementing water restrictions. This is informed by infrequent rains and drought. As a result, water as the source does not meet the demands of the city. The city has come up with a plan during this time.

REQUIRED WATER SAVINGS

The actual water consumption for the 2013/2014 financial year amounted to 86.6 million m³/annum. To achieve 15% water restriction MMM is expected to consume 206 mega litres per day (ML/D)

1 Mega Litre = 1 Million Litres

  • Bloemfontein: (206*0.7865) = 162 ML/D
  • Botshabelo: (206*0.1271) = 26.2 ML/D
  • Thaba Nchu: (206*0.0864) = 17.8 ML/D

The required water savings will be achieved through:

  • Leak detection and repairs programme
  • Pressure Management programme
  • Consumers Education & Awareness Programme
  • Implementation of Water Restrictions as set out below

WATER USE RESTRICTIONS

  • Watering of lawn is prohibited.
  • Watering of plants by utilizing hosepipes and or irrigation systems is prohibited.

Any contraventions to these restrictions as set out above will result in consequences and fines that go up to R20 000 (Twenty thousand rands).
